Saint Francis Middle School participates in “Pennies for Patients”
For the past 11 years Saint Francis Middle School in Roswell, GA has participated in the Pennies for Patients fundraiser for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. To date, the school has raised over $50,000 for the Leukemia Society. Unfortunately, on October 6th ,2011 Saint Francis Schools own, Kathy Shonkwiler, was diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia. AML is a very aggressive and deadly form of leukemia. A month after being diagnosed Mrs. Shonkwiler lost her battle with AML shocking all who knew and loved her.
Kathy Shonkwiler was the Saint Francis Middle School Administrative Assistant for over 15 years and known to the faculty, staff and students as the “Mother of Saint Francis”. Mrs. Shonkwiler was a caring, loving individual to all that knew her. Because of the schools devastating loss a decision was made that the first $1,000 raised from Pennies for Patients be used to create a memorial garden for Mrs. Shonkwiler. The memorial garden consists of a bench in her honor and beautiful flowers and plants. In the middle of the garden a Purple Japanese Maple tree was planted to symbolize “life”. A tall “Angel of Patience” also stands in the garden because that is what Kathy Shonkwiler was an “Angel of Patience”.
Kathy Shonkwiler was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. She enjoyed gospel singing, gardening, and spending time with children. Mrs. Shonkwiler continues to live on through her loving husband Monte Shonkwiler, her daughters Ginger and Jill and their spouses, and her grandchildren Kendyl, Bryce, Devyn, Erika, Garrett, and Zane. She will be forever missed but always remembered!
