High School Students in the Community Spotlight
Michelle Dickson has been appointed to the first Youth Council for CURE Childhood Cancer. Michelle had to complete an application and essay, as well as an extensive interview with the CURE Board. Michelle was one of six students appointed from the entire Atlanta area. Michelle’s two year appointment will consist of learning about community service and nonprofit work from the inside out while further developing important leadership skills. Michelle will serve as an ambassador for CURE Childhood Cancer in the community and will attend at least one meeting of CURE’s Board of Directors. Congratulations, Michelle!
Rachel Lee attended Iowa State University’s AgDiscovery program as one of 16 high school students selected from more than 100 applicants from around the country who applied to the program. Rachel spent 2 weeks at ISU learning about careers in plant and animal science and wildlife management. The program allowed Rachel to live on a college campus and learn about agriculture from university professors and scientists in a variety of fields. Rachel got “hands on” experience in anatomy, bacteriology, hematology, parasitology, immunology, embryology, animal necropsies, and other veterinary diagnostic procedures. Congratulations, Rachel!
Elana Spiegel is the co-founder of a non-profit organization called Cardz- For- A Cause, Inc. Elana and a friend were participating in a fundraiser in downtown Atlanta and were overwhelmed by the amount of homeless people. This inspired them to create an organization that helped homeless people in the Atlanta area. Since its origin, Cardz- For- A Cause has prepared meals for homeless shelters and planned a Jump-Rope-A-Thon which collected over $1,100. The next step for Cardz- For -A Cause is to distribute gift cards to a variety of shelters in the surrounding Atlanta area. Congratulations, Elana!
