Joey Roche (11), senior St. Francis QB throws down field.St. Francis earned one of the biggest wins in program history last Friday with a 27-14 home victory over Whitefield Academy. Senior quarterback Joey Roche threw for 224 yards to give the Knights the win.

St. Francis (2-2, 1-1) had a methodical scoring drive in its first possession of the game, going 78 yards on 12 plays and ending with a one-yard dive up the middle by fullback Sam France to give the Knights an early 7-0 advantage.

Whitefield (1-2, 0-1) responded with a touchdown on a one-yard run by Lawrence Waters with 2:37 left in the first quarter to tie the score for the WolfPack.

Whitefield had several strong defensive plays throughout the contest, including an interception by Braelen Phillips on St. Francis’ next possession but the WolfPack couldn’t take advantage.

The Knights’ biggest offensive play of the game came on an 82-yard touchdown pass down the middle from Roche to Nathan Waller, who fought off a defender and made a juggling catch in stride before racing to the end zone midway though the second quarter, increasing St. Francis’ lead to 14-7.

St. Francis also had a stellar defensive effort, causing multiple turnovers, including a fumble in the second quarter that was recovered by Lake McClure. This eventually led to St. Francis taking a 21-7 lead into halftime courtesy of a 15-yard touchdown pass from Roche to Waller with nine seconds left in the second quarter.

Whitefield cut the Knights’ lead in half in the third quarter on a possession that was triggered though an interception by Waters on an errant Roche pass. The WolfPack proceeded to make the score 21-14 on a one-yard quarterback sneak by Everett Pollard with 1:15 left in the third quarter.

St. Francis secured the victory with its final score of the night, a one-yard touchdown run by Jonah Huff late in the fourth quarter.

Waller finished the contest with a game-high 169 yards receiving on five catches while Huff’s 68 yards rushing for the Knights was also the most by a player on either team.
