The Mix Book Club and Books for Kate for The Pajama Project
The Mix Book Club is off to a great start in the 2015-2016 school year! Our first pick this year was the wildly popular The Martian by Andy Weir. This book, which inspired the movie starring Matt Damon, has taken the coveted spot of most circulated book in the Saint Francis library and has all our students talking. After that, half of our club members voiced a preference for young adult fiction, while the other half prefer fiction and nonfiction written for adults. As a result, we’ve broken book club into two groups that meet on alternating Thursday mornings. The young adult group has just finished Sophie Kinsella’s first YA novel, Finding Audrey and has started Erin Bow’s debut dystopian novel, The Scorpion Rules. The adult fiction & nonfiction group has chosen to read about murder and engineering during the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair in Erik Larson’s The Devil in the White City.
In October, The Mix Book Club sponsored our annual community service project collecting new children’s books and pajamas for The Pajama Project via Books for Kate. Books for Kate was started in memory of Kate Crockett, daughter of retired Saint Francis teacher A.G. Crockett. To honor Kate’s love of reading and her big heart, Books for Kate donates new books and new warm pa
jamas to children in foster care. All students were invited to bring in one pair of pajamas and one new book to earn one community service hour. Our students went above and beyond and donated a total of 140 pajamas and books! The donations were delivered to FaithBridge Foster Care and Easter Seals CDC, where they were distributed to foster children of all ages.
