High School Students Raise Money for Pennies for Patients








Saint Francis High School students recently raised $,7,559.12 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.  The money raised will help fund important cancer research and local patient services – both vital to the fight again blood cancers.

We are so proud of our students for all of their efforts in raising so much for this worthy cause.

Art Students Earn Silver Medals at National Level for Scholastic Art & Writing Awards

Congratulations to our two Saint Francis students who have the distinction of winning Silver Medals at the National Level in this year’s Scholastic Art & Writing Awards:

Junior, Will Jackson, Ceramics II, for his Platter

These awards are in addition to the Gold Keys they each won regionally. This is the first time a Saint Francis student has reached this level in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards competition.
Congratulations, also, to senior students Michelle Crim and Matt Cross you won Gold Keys in the regional competition.

High School Art Students Compete with a focus on Art, Photography, Film, and Ceramics

Our high school art students participate throughout the year in a variety of competitions with a focus on art, photography, film, and ceramics.  The specifics of these competitions are detailed as follows:

Congratulations to Senior Chloe Bohan and Junior Sophie McCartney, for winning Honorable Mention in the juried 2018 Biennial Southeastern High School Artist Competition. Four students had their artwork selected to be in the 2018 Biennial Southeastern High School Artist Competition at Birmingham Southern College. Students from ten southeastern states compete for this honor. Our four students are Seniors Chloe Bohan for her photograph, Caleb Covert for his sculpture, Garrett Dickerson for his platter and Junior Sophie McCartney for her watercolor painting. The work was on display from  January 14th in the Durbin Gallery until January 25th. The purpose of the competition is the recognition and promotion of talented rising artists in the Southeastern United States. Images of the exhibited work will be placed on the Birmingham Southern College’s Art & Art History website at Each student will receive a certificate suitable for framing and a one-year membership to the  BSC Fine Art Alliance.

atlanta high school art exhibition:

2018 Finalists Senior, Garrett Dickerson, Senior, Caleb Covert and Junior, Jack Gruskin

Each year, the Atlanta High School Art Exhibition (AHSAE) offers young artists an opportunity to compete, exhibit their work and earn prizes such as scholarships and art supplies. This “must see” festival event is a juried competition drawing upwards of 700 entries each year from which the best hundred works comprise the festival exhibition.

Six hundred and eighty-six pieces were entered in this year’s Atlanta High School Art Exhibition and one hundred and forty-six pieces were accepted.  Our seniors Caleb Covert, Garrett Dickerson and junior Jack Gruskin had their ceramic work selected to be in the exhibit at the Dogwood Festival in Piedmont Park in April.

university of north georgia invitational:

Each year the University of North Georgia invites a group of art teachers and two of their students to submit work for their juried invitational art exhibit. This year senior Chloe Bohan had her photograph “Survivor” , junior Sophie McCartney had her charcoal drawing “Train Station” and teacher Barb Swanner had her painting “Points of Impact” accepted into the show. The awards ceremony and reception will held on March 8th.



Georgia High School Ceramic Arts Awards & Symposium (GHSCAAS)

The GHSCAAS will be held on Saturday, March 24th at Piedmont College in Demorest, GA this year. Our students whose work has been juried into this competition are seniors Matt Cross, Garrett Dickerson, Sarah Gibeaut,, Jack Kinney, Graham Owenby, and juniors  Jack Gruskin, Sam Henn, Riley Larkworthy, Griffin Weaver.This is the first time in the history of our ceramics program that every piece entered into a juried show was accepted. The student work will be on display throughout the main hallway of the art building on the college’s campus. Students attending the symposium will participate in clay workshops and a raku firing presented by college professors, college students and high school ceramic teachers. Attendees will have the opportunity to raku fire a piece of their own. At the end of the symposium an awards ceremony will be held where cash awards will be distributed. As a special adjunct to this year’s event. The Signature Shop in Buckhead will be hosting a pop up shop and curating a special invitational exhibit of forty place settings designed by professional potters.


Piedmont College High School Art Show

Sixteen students, fifteen ceramic students and one painting student from the fine arts department had their artwork on display in the Piedmont College High School Art Show at the  Mason-Scharfenstein Museum of Art in downtown Demorest, Georgia from January 8th – 18th. Unfortunately the awards ceremony was during the ice event and our students did attend the reception. Senior Matt Cross, won an Honorable Mention for his ceramic piece “Wounds of War”.  Students with work on display were: Seniors Matt Cross, Jack Kinney, Sarah Gibeaut, Caleb Covert, Graham Owenby, Garrett Dickerson and Juniors Sophie McCartney, (painting) Riley Larkworthy, Sam Henn, Harrison Warner, Jack Gruskin, Griffin Weaver, Will Jackson, Emma Motter, Sophomores Maddie Ulmer and Rachel Wolchock. This was the first year we were invited to this event.



Senior Chloe Bohan and Junior Sophie McCartney had their work on display in the Capitol Art Exhibit in the Twin Towers Building Lobby in Atlanta from February 17th – 24th. On Wednesday, February 21st, Sophie and Mrs. Swanner attended the reception along with Sophie’s mom, where Sophie got to meet Senator John Albers, and was invited to be a page for a day for the State Senate. Chloe was unable to attend the reception as our girls soccer team had game, and Chloe is a team member.


Congratulations to our All State Art Competition District Winners seniors Caleb Covert and Sarah Gibeaut and Junior Sophie McCartney. Their artwork was chosen as winners from all the entries in our district which includes the public and private schools in Fulton, Dekalb, Cobb and Gwinnett counties. These pieces now go on to compete at the state level, against all the district winners statewide.


The State Winners will have their work taken to Columbus State to compete for further awards.  Chloe Bohan’s work has been chosen as a State Award winner and will be on display at the Corn Center at Columbus State University and will go on to be judged for further awards which will be announced at the closing reception on March 10th.

Knights and Lady Knights Bring 2017-18 Basketball Season to a Close

2017-2018 Saint Francis Boys Basketball Team and Runner Up in the State 1A Private Championship

With an overall W-L record of 27-4 for the 2017-2018 basketball season our Knights ended their season with a battle for Class A Private State Championship.  The boys left it all on the court in the championship game against Aquinas.  Regardless of their 60-65 loss this young group of boys played their hearts out.  Congratulation to a great season for the players/coaches/and managers.  For more background on this talented group of boys visit


Our Lady Knights ended their basketball season with a hard loss to Weslyan in the State Tournament Semi-Finals.  Regardless, this 2017-2018 basketball season was filled with much success for our Lady Knights as they ended with a W-L record of 26-5 and were 14-0 in their Region earning them the Region 6 Champions.  Congratulations to all for a terrific season.

Knights and Lady Knights Advance to 2nd Round of State Basketball Tournament

Knights Fans:

The Knights have advanced to the 2nd Round of the State Tournament! We are excited to be hosting both the Girls’ and Boys’ teams tonight, Thursday 2/22. The Girls’ team will play Galloway with a 5:00 tip off. The Boys’ team will play Walker with a 6:30 tip off. Come help us cheer our Lady Knights and Knights on to victory!

Please be aware that due to GHSA regulations all spectators, including students, must pay to receive admission to the State Tournament games. The price of admission is $10.00 for this double-header (fans age 5 and under are free). Saint Francis Booster Club passes cannot be accepted at these games, as this is a GHSA rule.  We will keep you updated on our teams’ progress. We look forward to seeing you Thursday night!
